Julius Caesar

• "Veni, vidi, vici."
  • Translation: "I came, I saw, I conquered."
  • Comment: written in a report to Rome 47 B.C. after conquering Farnakes at Zela in Asia Minor in just five days.

• "Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres."
  • Translation: All Gaul is divided into three parts
  • Notes: said at the opening line of his Commentaries on the Gallic Wars.

• "De omnis Belgae fortissimi sunt."
  • Translation: Of all these, the Belgians are the bravest/strongest .
  • Notes: The meaning has to be sought in the fact that the Belgian tribes were less civilised than the other tribes, who lived more to the south, closer to the Roman Provences in the south of France, he explains this in the next lines .

• "Alea iacta est."
  • Translation: "The die is cast."
  • Said when crossing the river Rubicon with his legions, thus beginning the civil war that ended the Roman Republic and created the Roman Empire. The Rubicon river was the boundary of Gaul, the province Caesar had the authority to keep his army in. By crossing the river, he had committed an invasion of Rome.
