United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission
The United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) is the arms-inspection group for Iraq. It is the successor to the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM), when it was claimed that the Central Intelligence Agency agents were using the access provided by UNSCOM for espionage.
It was created in 1999 "to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological weapons and missiles with a range of more than 150 km)".
UNMOVIC acting executive chairman Demetrius Perricos told the UN Security Council on June 9 that "the only controls at the borders are for the weight of the scrap metal, and to check whether there are any explosive or radioactive materials within the scrap".
