Tramping

Tramping is a term used in New Zealand for what is elsewhere termed hiking.

The term is used for overnight walks on or off a network of tracks (trails) in the backcountry. Tramping may involve the use of a tent or the network of huts as shelter. If an overnight stay is not involved the term day walk is commonly used.

The word hiking is increasingly replacing the word tramping due perhaps in part due to the popularity of tourism.
