Tibetan rug

Tibetan rug making is an ancient art and craft in tradition of Tibetan people. These rugs are primarily made from tibetan highland sheep's virgin wool. Tibetan uses rugs for almost about any domestic use from flooring to wall-to-wall hanging to horse saddle etc.

Process of making tibetan rugs are very unique in sense that almost about everything is done with hand. But with introduction of modern technology, few aspects of rug making processes are taken over by machine primarily because of cost, disappearence of knowledge etc. However some new finishing touch are also introduced in it.

With Tibet's occupation by Chinese communists in early 1950, Tibetan reffuge started migrating to India and Nepal, with them, they also brought their knowledge of rug making. Currently in Nepal rug business one of the largest industry in the country and there are many rug exporters.
