Thermoacoustics

Thermoacoustics is the use of sound waves to affect temperature. Practical uses involve rapid acoustical shocks to produce cooling, as might be employed in a refrigerator. Thermoacoustic condensors might someday replace ozone-depleting refrigerants in current refrigerators.

Ben and Jerry's ice cream makers audited their refrigeration practices in 2001, and became alarmed of negative environmental impact. As a result, they are supporting the research of Dr. Steven Garrett and his research team at Pennsylvania State University.
