The Hobbit (1977 movie)

J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit was adapted into an animated movie by the Rankin-Bass studios in 1977.

The movie was first broadcast on USA television, and was tailored to children: the story was done in a very light-hearted style, and featured a lot of songs.

The story's hero Bilbo Baggins was voiced by Orson Bean, backed up by John Huston as the voice of Gandalf. Otto Preminger was the voice of the Elvenking, Richard Boone Smaug, Hans Conried voiced Thorin Oakenshield, and Brother Theodore was chosen for the voice of Gollum.

While the movie is fairly faithful to the story, it is at its core still a child-oriented musical adaptation, and therefore is by no means a perfect adaption of Tolkien's novel.

The same team and much of the voice cast returned for the 1980 adaption of The Return of the King.
