Surabaya City is the capital of the East Java (Jawa Timur) province in Indonesia. It is located on the northern shore of Java at the mouth of the Mas River, and is a major seaport.Surabaya is the second largest Indonesian city (after Jakarta) and its principle exports include sugar, tobacco and coffee. It has a large shipyard, and numerous specialised naval schools.

History
Surabaya was an important base for the Dutch prior to World War II, the Dutch name is Soerabaja.
Surabaya was captured by the Japanese in 1942, until the Allies bombed it in 1944. After that it was seized by Indonesian nationalists, then reoccupied (through force) by the Dutch in 1947. Because of prolonged international pressure, the Dutch agreed to transfer the sovereignty of its colony in August 1949.
Surabaya was ultimately incorporated into the Republic of Indonesia in December 1949 and rebuilt.
Surabaya has many educational institutions. They are:
Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), one of the best institute of technology in Indonesia besides Bandung Institute of Technology(ITB). ITS very famous for robotic technology,information technology,machine and material technology, and vessel and marine technology.
Airlangga university, one of the oldest university in Indonesia. Airlangga university is considered as the best for medical education in Indonesia.
Sunan Ampel Institute of Islam Religion, do you want to get more knowledge about Islam? This institute has many smart student and intelectuals for Islam Religion.
Naval Military Academy, because Surabaya consider as the most important naval base in Eastern Indonesia, Indonesian military has Naval Military Academy base in Surabaya
Surabaya State University, consider as the best university for teacher education.
Now
Surabaya now grow as the largest metropolitan city in Eastern Indonesia. Surabaya has main role to become Eastern Indonesia Gate. The population now are around 3.000.000 people. Surabaya is surounding by the other city that could be considered as Surabaya's sattelite cities, they are Lamongan at the north west, Gresik at the north, Bangkalan at the north east, Sidoarjo at the south,and also Mojokerto and Jombang at the south west. Many Citizen of those cities work in Surabaya in the day,and back to their houses at night.
Now at the seaside of Surabaya, Indonesian Government build the longest bridge in Indonesia (5 km). The bridge will connect Surabaya with Madura islands (the 6th largest island in Indonesia).Interesting Facts
