Shojo-ai
This article should be merged with Yuri. See for details.
Shōjo-ai (少女愛; from 少女 shōjo; young woman + 愛 ai love, coined by analogy with shonen-ai), refers to anime or manga that deals with love between teenage girls or young women. Shōjo-ai is usually thought of as less explicit or sexual than yuri.
Shōjo-ai is much less common than shōnen-ai; when it does appear, it is usually as part of shojo anime or manga. Series famous for shojo-ai content include Sailor Moon, Maria-sama ga Miteru, and Revolutionary Girl Utena; the last of these focuses on a female couple.
The above definition of shōjo-ai does not derive from the Japanese use of the term, and in fact such a meaning is not found in use in Japan. Instead, the term is used as an approximate synonym to lolicon, exactly equivalent in terms of context, userbase, and rarity to the parallel English coinage "girllove" which is its literal translation.
