Satellite phone
A satellite phone is a phone that receives signals directly from satellites orbiting the earth for communications purposes. The communications satellite network covers almost all, if not the entire surface of the earth, so a satellite phone can be used to communicate over the telephone network anywhere in the world. This can be particularly useful in rural or very remote areas, such as when camping or on mountain climbing expeditions.Satellite phones are also known more simply as "sat phones". They have gained some notoriety in recent years for being used extensively by people hiding in remote areas, such as Osama bin Laden.
