Peace park

Transfrontier convservation areas (TCFAs) or peace parks are defined as relatively large protected areas which straddle the borders of two or more countries. Removing fences and other border barriers within these parks aims to allow traditional human and animal migration.

TCFAs also encourage tourism, economic development and goodwill between neighbouring countries. Current TCFAs and proposed sites are concentrated in Southern Africa. However, TCFA sites have been proposed in other regions, including the demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea.

The best known peace park is the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. It links national parks in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and covers an area of 35,000km². This includes the famous Kruger National Park.

Peace Parks

The Peace Parks Foundation was set up by WWF and Dr Anton Rupert in February 1997 to encourage and facilitate the establishment of TCFAs. It is actively supported by Dr Nelson Mandela.
