Panama disease

Panama disease, also known as Fusarium wilt, is a banana plant disease caused by fungus Fusarium oxysporum. The fungus attacks roots of the plant. The disease cannot be controlled chemically.

Early export cultivar of banana, Gros Michael, was wiped out by this disease in the 1950s. This lead to adoption of Cavendish cultivar, resistant to the disease. However, recently strain called tropical race four Panama disease was able to attack Cavendish plants in south Asia.
