Music of Palau

Traditional Music of Palau is akin to the surrounding islands of Polynesia and Micronesia. The traditional grass-skirt is yellow. The Palauan women's club (cheldebechel) dance the "bruchel" which is performed by women only. The traditional men's loin cloth is red and they also have dances which they perform.

Being that dancing is an important part of the cultural heritage of Palau as well as clan customs, music is a must have in every Palaun setting. During the late 60's and 70's, Micronesia adopted the cha-cha and today it is still the staple dance, with variou adaptations according to the individual. Johnny B is Palau's first modern day singer and Sydney Mobel, former Guam night club manager, is one of Palau's most reknown bass guitarists. Both have performed since the onset of the cha-cha. Gen-X Palauns are still loyal to their roots and love Palauan lyrics. Perhaps the biggest instrumental influence on youth today, is Reggae and most definitely in live band format. Local cable is host to MTV ASIA which plays current American, European, and Asian hits.
