Burundi is a Central African nation that is closely linked with Rwanda, geographically, historically and culturally. Internationally, the country has produced an exteremely notable music group in the Master Drummers of Burundi, the former royal percussionists. It was the Master Drummers that inspired Thomas Brooman to organize the first WOMAD festival in 1982, igniting the world music scene.

Burundian-Belgian musicians like Éric Baranyanka;, Ciza Muhirwa and, especially, Khadja Nin, have more recently gained prominence.
