Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It most recently erupted on June 15, 1991. Mount Pinatubo lies at the intersection of the borders of the provinces of Zambales, Bataan, and Pampanga. Before the 1991 eruption, Pinatubo lay dormant for more than 600 years.
The 1991 eruption resulted in many changes. Ashfall and lahar inundated the rice fields of Central Luzon making vast areas of previously agricultural land unproductive. The yearly rainy season brought about rampaging lahar which would only abate after ten years. The eruption was also one of the reasons why the U.S. military forces left their bases in the Philippines, after mounting a massive rescue effort to save civilians. Subic Bay Naval Base was 75 km (50 mi.) to the southwest, while Clark Air Base was a mere 40 km (25 mi.) to the east of the volcano's summit.
