Maldivian Democratic Party

The Maldivian Democratic Party is a political party in exile from the Maldives. It was founded in 2001 by a group of 42 people, which included members of parliament, a former cabinet minister, leading businessmen, academics and sports stars. It was founded to promote human rights and democracy in the Maldives. President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom refused to register the party which led it it being officially formed on the 10 November, 2003, in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

Since then its major activities have been encouraging nonviolent resistance to the Maldivian government and promoting awareness of what it believes are human rights violations.
