Khujand

Khujand, formerly Leninabad is the northernmost region of the Republic of Tajikistan. The region shares a border with Jizakh, Namangan, Samarkand and Fergana regions of Uzbekistan, and Osh region of Kyrgyzstan. The Sirdarya river flows through it. Leninabad was founded on the October 27th 1939, and reestablished on the December 23rd 1970. It was renmaed Khujand after the breakup of the Soviet Union. The region is 261,000 kmē. and consists of 8 towns, 14 districts, 20 settlements and 93 villages.
