Ixelles

Ixelles (French) or Elsene (Dutch) is one of the nineteen municipalities located in the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium.

On 1 January 2000 the municipality had a total population of 73,174 (35,476 males and 37,698 females). The total area is 6.29 km² which gives a population density of 11,633 inhabitants per km².

Geography

Ixelles is located in south of Brussels and is divided into two parts by the Louise Avenue (l'avenue Louise in French), which is part of the Bruxelles-Ville municipality. The west part of the municipality (the smallest of the two parts) includes the Bailly Street (la rue du Bailly in French) and extends roughly from the Louise Avenue to the Brugmann Avenue (l'avenue Brugmann in French). The east part of the municipality (which is the largest part) includes the sites of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Matongé (a neighbourhood with a large African population) and the Flagey Square (la Place Flagey in French).

The Bois de La Cambre (French) (or Ter kamerenbos in Dutch) is located just south of Ixelles.
