Religion

In English church history, an Independent advocated local congregational control of religious and church matters, without any wider geographical hierarchy, either ecclesiastical or political. Independents reached particular prominence in the period of the English Civil War and of the Commonwealth of England.

• a set of vectors can be linearly independent, in which case they make up a basis for the space in which the set of vectors resides;

• the argument to a function is the independent variable, an entirely different concept from that of statistical independence.

Independence is the status of a state or country whose government is not subject to any other government. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, a similar concept is called autocephaly.

In politics, an independent is a voter or a politician who is not affiliated with any political party. Associated with centrist or radical middle politics, independent's are often seen as the deciding vote in a two party system election.
