HMS Hood
There have been three ships of the British Royal Navy named HMS Hood, named after various members of the Hood family, who produced several notable Navy officers:
- The first Hood, 80 was an Edgar class warship launched in 1859. She was named after Admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood of Whitley. Constructed of wood and sail-powered, she later had a steam engine fitted. She was decommissioned in 1888.
- The second Hood was a modified Royal Sovereign class battleship built at Chatham, England, launched in 1891 and sunk as a blockship in 1914.
- The last Hood was a battlecruiser launched in 1918, and famously sunk in 1941 by the Bismarck in one of the worst naval disasters of World War II, only three crew members out of 1400 surviving.
