Five o'clock shadow
Five o'clock shadow has several meanings.
- A five o'clock shadow is unwanted beard growth visible late in the day on a man's shaven face. The term gradually went out of fashion as, from the 1980s on, the two-day stubble look gained both popularity and social acceptance. The most famous politician in history sporting a five o'clock shadow at a time when it was still considered a faux pas was U.S. president Richard Nixon, who is said to have lost the 1960 presidential election due to his unfortunate appearance during the televised debate with John F. Kennedy.
