While the college had a Professor of Divinity from its inception, the theological portion became a distinct but affiliated school, the Erskine Theological Seminary in 1858.

Today, while it still has less than 600 students, it is among the highest academic ranking colleges in the USA, having a faculty/student ration of 1/13. It is a Christian liberal arts college.
