Delitzsch

Delitzsch is a city in Saxony, near Leipzig.

The town was founded around 1200 (chronicles say so) and got it cityhood in 1300. When the city was founded it had fought a lot of enemies through the centuries: first the Slavic tribals who lived there until the city was founded, then the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). From this final encounter with the Swedes there is a legend that said when the Swedes reached the river Lober the tower warden's daughter got the enemies in her view and blew the trumpet so the citizens of the town could get in safety and the enemies were defeated by a large number. So every year there is a historical fair (medieval style) where regional small enterprises can represent themselves and the shopping centers are open on Sundays. The citizens can walk along the fair and celebrate the victory over the Swedes.

In a survey of 1996 Delitzsch had more than 27,000 inhabitants. But many young people leave the region because of the high unemployment rate in the "Neue Bundesländer" (New Federal States). They go to the western parts of Germany to seek for employment and better education.
