Austrian cuisine

Austrian cuisine is the cooking style in the tradition of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. It combined Austrian, Hungarian, Czech, Italian and Jewish styles of cooking and it integrates a lot of regional Austrian products and recipes. Austrian cuisine is also well known for its sweets, called Mehlspeisen.

Some famous Austrian food and specialties include:

  • Apfelstrudel (a kind of apple desert)
  • Topfenstrudel (a cream cheese strudel)
  • Danish pastry
  • Wiener schnitzel
  • Sacher torte (a chocolate cake)
  • Tafelspitz (cooked beef)
  • Kürbiskernöl (pumpkinseed oil)
  • Grüner Veltliner (white wine)
  • Schilcher (wine)
  • Gulasch (different hot pots, somewhat similar to hungarian Pörkölt)
